Q. Is it possible to teach small animals how to act?

A. We don't train animals to act. Small animals mostly have low intelligence, which makes it difficult to teach them something. However, each animals have their own characteristics. It is possible to make their unique behavior look as if they are acting. For example, using 10 different flying squirrels would mean that the squirrels will express 10 different characters. In fact, in 4INCHERS, there were more than 200 animal actors.

Q. Is there a special reason you like small animals?

A. After finishing my bachelor’s degree on Veterinary studies, I was a scenario writer for a long time before I became a movie director. As a lonely scenario writer, I started raising 10cm sized animals, and observed them when I was exhausted from work. Through this routine of watching the animals, I learned that even animals with low intelligence had their own unique characteristics. This insight was a big help to become a animal drama director. The number of pets gradually increased, and soon I had 50 small roommates living with me.

Q. Were there any difficulties in making a movie with more than 200 small animals?

A. Ever since I was in junior high school, I was unable to smell. These days I cannot smell anything. This was a big advantage when raising many animals. I would release my 50 pets from the cage and let them sleep with me, and play on my shoulders. I imagined myself as a snow white.

I wanted to share this joy, and started filming animals. In order to film the animals, I wrote a scenario that could create a coherent story from the animal’s characteristics. I made a short movie with my mobile phone, scenario, and my little friends for more than 10 years. From this experience I found out that ‘acting of animals’ has a different taste from other conventional movies, and figured out how to film a TV series only with animal acting. The first result of my passion is a mini-pet TV series '4inchers'. This is 'Mission Impossible' in animal version. The main plot is the adventure of mini-pets struggling to recover their house from a cat that is obviously bigger than them.

4INCHERS is a completely new genre. It is created solely by mini pet’s acting. It is a TV series for kids, but at the same time it is for families.
